Born in Hull, Massachusetts, Joseph Loring moved to Boston, where he served his apprenticeship and later opened his own shop on Union Street. Loring married Mary Atkins in 1766, and later served as a first lieutenant during the Revolution. He was taken prisoner and spent nine months on Long Island before returning to Boston in 1777.
